The east coast (quiet, shoulder, still lovely). March is the tail of the northeast-monsoon shoulder on the east coast — not yet prime (that is May–September) but improving and far less crowded. Trincomalee scores a striking 9.33 in March, and the beaches of Nilaveli and Passikudah are quieter than they will be all summer. Crowds and prices drop from the February peak. March follows the December–February high season, so room rates ease and the famous sights get noticeably quieter while the weather holds. Inter-monsoon showers appear late in the month. The southwest monsoon starts building toward May, so the very end of March and into April can bring short, sharp inter-monsoon showers island-wide — usually brief afternoon bursts, mostly fine for temples, tea and wildlife but a small risk for guaranteed beach days in the final week. Early-to-mid March is the cleanest window.

Sinhala & Tamil New Year approaches. The festival falls in mid-April, but domestic travel and booking patterns start shifting in late March as Sri Lankans plan their New Year trips. It is not disruptive — if anything it adds local colour — just be aware internal transport gets busier into April.
